How to Help 
As the state’s volunteer organization, Volunteer WV will continue to support our partner organizations who rely on volunteers to deliver essential services. We will use our website and E-news to highlight volunteer opportunities to support communities throughout West Virginia during this difficult time. 

Please be safe while volunteering. If you are considering taking part in organization-led volunteer projects during this time, we ask that you observe the CDC guidelines and precautions. Volunteer Agencies who need to keep providing critical services to our WV communities, please review the following guidelines:

COVID-19 Volunteer Opportunities 
The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Charleston
Charleston 
Starting the week of June 1st, the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Charleston will be offering go boxes for their members to pick-up and complete from home. Each box includes food for the week that align with USDA guidelines, themed activities and supplies dedicated to academic success, good character and leadership, and healthy lifestyles, and updated lists of local resources for health and social services. Statewide Food Drive

Throughout the month of May volunteers are collecting canned and dried food to feed West Virginia families in need. The project is sponsored by the West Virginia Voluntary Organizations in Disaster (WV VOAD), Catholic Charities WV, and the West Virginia Council of Churches. The food will be donated to West Virginia's food banks. For more information click here

The West Virginia Folklife Program
Statewide 
The West Virginia Folklife Program, a project of the West Virginia Humanities Council, is collecting documentation of the various ways West Virginians are creatively responding to the COVID-19 crisis and sharing their experiences through music, stories, writing, craft, art, memes, mask-making and more.

West Virginians can share documentation of their creative responses by leaving a voicemail on the toll-free West Virginia Folklife Hotline at 1-844-618-3747 , or by emailing hilliard@wvhumanities.org. Contributors must own the rights to their submission and should include proper crediting information. Photos and videos should be submitted in the highest resolution possible. By submitting, you are giving the West Virginia Folklife Program permission to share your name and materials. These documents will become part of the West Virginia Folklife archive, and will be shared a future online exhibit.

The United Way of Central West Virginia 
Charleston
The United Way of Central West Virginia needs volunteers for the following:
  • Gabriel Project, located at Asbury Methodist Church, needs help on Thursdays from 11a-1pm to distribute diapers, formula and other baby needs.  Must be able to lift heavy boxes. Mask and gloves will be provided for volunteer safety. 
  • Local Charleston West Side food pantry (401 Roane Street) needs help on Mondays. Must be able to lift heavy boxes. Mask and gloves will be provided for volunteer safety. 
  • SEWERS NEEDED to make masks!  Will provide material and patterns, if needed.

The American Red Cross West Virginia Region 
Statewide 
The American Red Cross West Virginia Region is  seeking volunteers who are healthy and feeling well to give blood to make up for canceled blood drive events during the pandemic. Appointments are available via the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online at RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

Meals On Wheels

WV Medical Mask Army 
Statewide 
West Virginia Mask Army is an emerging nonprofit sewing protective masks for medical personnel using quality filter material. Volunteers are needed to sew masks from provided materials. To volunteer, contact a volunteer hub near you to inquire about supply availabilityVolunteers can arrange a time to safely pick up supplies and drop off completed masks without face-to-face contact.

 
Teach Students Hobbies 
Statewide 
Do you have a hobby that you would like to teach a child? Volunteers are needed to teach students hobbies - such as painting, baking, knitting, Yoga, calligraphy, martial arts, and cooking. This project helps students interact with caring role models and learn new things while they are at home. The videos will be recorded virtually and then shared with the students. This project is being organized by Education Alliance AmeriCorps VISTA Bobbi Mitchell. To sign up as a volunteer click here. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State, Letters for Littles 
Statewide 
Volunteers are needed to write encouraging notes to children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. As adults we understand that these are unprecedented times, but we also know that things will eventually be alright and life will return more or less to normal.  Children may not have a clear understanding of what's going on, how long it might last, or even if life will ever return to normal. Big Brothers Big Sisters will coordinate the delivery of the cards and notes.

Foster a Pet 
Statewide 

Volunteers are needed throughout the state to foster animals from their local animal shelters. Getting animals into foster homes during this time allows shelter staff to self-quarantine. Animals also provide companionship and unconditional love that can be beneficial at this time. It's a win win situation! To learn more contact your local Humane Society or Animal Shelter.

High Rocks is currently collecting: Clamshell takeout containers, Aluminum foil trays, Disposable packages of forks/knife/napkin sets. These items will be used to package meals for their community.
